Lakeland History

Lakeland was founded in 1964 by Alan Rayner, an agricultural feed salesman based in Windermere in the Lake District. Alan had spotted that local farmers needed polythene bags for packing poultry, and began supplying them from his garage at home. Word spread quickly, and what started as a practical solution for farmers soon grew into a mail order business - Lakeland Plastics - selling agricultural plastics and home-freezing products. In 1974, Alan retired and handed the business to his three sons: Martin, Sam and Julian Rayner. The brothers recognised that people who froze food also cooked it, and began pivoting the range towards kitchenware, producing an "Everything for Home Cooking" catalogue that proved extremely popular.

Through the 1980s and 1990s Lakeland expanded steadily, opening its first stores and growing its mail-order catalogue business significantly. In 1997, the company changed its name from Lakeland Plastics to Lakeland Limited to reflect its evolution away from agricultural products. The Limited tag was dropped in 2007 as part of a wider contemporary rebranding, though the company's legal name remains Lakeland Limited. Today Lakeland operates around 68 stores nationwide, from Inverness to Truro, as well as a substantial online business. The flagship store in Windermere - rebuilt with a major investment to nearly double in size - sits next to the company's head office. Its distribution centre is in Kendal, Cumbria. The company has remained family-owned throughout its history and was rated first for retail customer service experience in the Which? Top of the Shops survey in 2019.
