Footasylum History
Footasylum was founded in 2005 by David Makin, who had previously co-founded JD Sports alongside John Wardle back in 1981. Drawing on decades of experience in premium sportswear retail, Makin opened the first Footasylum store in Cheshire with a clear vision: a boutique-style destination targeting fashion-conscious 16–25-year-olds who wanted something more curated than the traditional sports retailer. John Wardle, Makin's old JD Sports partner, joined him at Footasylum in 2008 and helped drive expansion across UK high streets.
The company listed on the London Stock Exchange's AIM market in 2017, valued at around £171 million. In 2019, JD Sports acquired Footasylum for £90 million, but the deal was blocked and then unwound by the Competition and Markets Authority following a lengthy regulatory battle. In August 2022, JD Sports sold Footasylum to German private equity firm Aurelius Group for £37.5 million. Under Aurelius ownership the business has gone from strength to strength, reporting its best-ever financial performance in 2024 and expanding its store estate to over 65 UK locations. Footasylum is headquartered in Rochdale, Greater Manchester.
